Let’s see how! ArcGIS Web MapsĪrcGIS is a mainstay mapping platform used by many in mapping and GIS. This means we can easily grab this data and visualize it in Tableau. Lucky for us, in Tableau version 2020.2, Tableau lets you connect directly to published web map data layers from ESRI’s (or ArcGIS Online), the platform where most of these public maps are hosted. I want to dig just a little deeper than the web map allowed me to, and I would love to bring this data into Tableau. In my case, I am particularly interested in tracking the location of the most recent active fires detected by satellite. Of course, as an analyst, I cannot help but want to get this data and visualize it in my tool of choice. Here in Portland, I have the Clackamas County Wildfire Evacuation Zones on constant refresh as to view not just the extent of the fires, but also to know if I or nearby friends/relatives need to evacuate: Warm temperatures will remain across the northern interior of Alaska, with more moderated conditions and scattered showers and thunderstorms across the southern half of the state.It is late summer 2020, and I, like many others on the West Coast, am currently surrounded by wildfires and glued to various online web maps showing the various states of the world burning down around us. Heavier precipitation will continue to affect portions of the eastern US, including the Ohio River Valley to portions of the Southeast. A weak low-pressure system will track over portions of the Pacific Northwest and provide gustier southwest winds and shower chances across the Washington Cascades, while drier conditions return across large portions of the northern and central Rockies. The combination of tropical and monsoonal moisture will fuel isolated to scattered wet and dry thunderstorms and gustier outflow winds across portions of the Desert Southwest and Great Basin. Hurricane Dora will move away from the Hawaiian Island chain and allow the stronger wind speeds to ease as the day progresses. Hot, dry, and breezy to windy conditions will develop across portions of Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and the Lower Mississippi River Valley. One MAFFS C-130 airtanker and support personnel from the 153rd Airlift Wing (Wyoming Air National Guard) and one MAFFS unit from the 302nd Airlift Wing (Colorado Air Force Reserve) have been deployed to Klamath Falls, OR to support wildland fire operations nationally. Two incident management teams, five fire suppression crews, 10 engines and 19 overhead personnel and are assigned to large fire support in Canada. 6 new large fires reported and 4 large fires contained.
